Export Liberalization and Water Pollution in China

摘要： This paper investigates the effect of export liberalization on water pollution emission. With data on Chinese firm-level water pollution emission around China's accession to the World Trade Organization, we identify a negative causal effect of export liberalization on firm-level water-pollution intensity using the exogenous shock to trade policy uncertainty. Further analyses reveal a “pollution heaven” effect that increases water-pollution intensity for exporting firms and an “enforcement effect” that decreases water-pollution intensity for all firms in the liberalized industry.

主讲人简介： 

陈晓平，哈尔滨工业大学（深圳）经济管理学院副教授。本科毕业于清华大学，2013年从美国波士顿学院博士毕业后任教于新加坡南洋理工大学经济系，2020年底加入哈工大（深圳）经济管理学院。主要研究领域为国际贸易，外商直接投资和中国经济，研究成果发表于多个高水平学术期刊，其中包括Journal of Development Economics, Review of International Economics, World Economy, China Economic Review, Economics & Politics等。
